Abstract

This article examines the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology in empowering rural youth in Malaysia. Malaysia, as the nation accelerates toward a digital economy, rural youth remain disadvantaged due to limited access to quality education, insufficient digital infrastructure, and fewer economic opportunities. AI applications such as intelligent tutoring systems, precision agriculture tools, and AI-driven entrepreneurial platforms—offer new avenues to bridge these gaps. These technologies not only enhance learning and productivity but also create new forms of employment and participation in the digital economy. Despite these opportunities, the implementation of AI in rural contexts faces several challenges. These include low levels of digital literacy, inadequate infrastructure, and concerns over data privacy and ethics. By reviewing national initiatives, case studies, and policy responses, this article identifies strategic interventions needed to ensure inclusive and sustainable AI development. It concludes by recommending a collaborative approach involving government, industry, and community stakeholders to ensure rural youth are not left behind but instead positioned as vital contributors to Malaysia’s digital transformation.
