Students' Perception of Kurikulum Merdeka Implementation in Learning English
Abstract
This study investigates students’ perceptions of the implementation of the Kurikulum Merdeka and its impact on their interest in learning English at SMAN 1 Indrapuri. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach, collecting data through in-depth interviews with eight tenth grade students selected purposively based on their highest and lowest English scores. Results indicate that most students responded positively, reporting that English learning became more enjoyable, interactive, and less monotonous due to varied methods such as group discussions, presentations, video media, quizzes, and project assignments. These approaches enhanced their speaking skills, vocabulary, and confidence. However, some students faced challenges in understanding materials and speaking due to low self confidence. Overall, the Kurikulum Merdeka fostered greater interest in learning and improved English skills, though success depended on teacher support, adaptive methods, and attention to students’ emotional and academic needs.
